Biography
Unbabel was an AI-powered Language Operations (LangOps) and translation platform that combined neural machine translation with a crowd of human post-editors to deliver multilingual customer support and enterprise translations.
Cause of Death
Unbabel suffered a massive decline in clients and revenue (dropping by over 45% in a single year) due to the rapid rise of cheaper, fully automated generative AI translation alternatives. After selling assets to TransPerfect in late 2025 in a low-value transaction that sparked legal disputes with investors (such as Buenavista Equity Partners), Unbabel filed for insolvency at the Lisbon District Court on March 10, 2026. On July 2, 2026, creditors unanimously voted to close and liquidate the company, which owed approximately €15.5 million.
