Coqui
Pay Tribute
Biography
Coqui was an open-source conversational AI and speech technology startup founded in 2021 by former Mozilla employees (Eren Gölge, Josh Meyer, Kelly Davis, and Reuben Morais). The company specialized in open-source generative speech technology, text-to-speech (TTS) models, quick voice cloning (such as the XTTS foundation model), and provided paid SaaS web application and REST API services for voice generation.
Cause of Death
Coqui shut down primarily due to severe funding constraints and monetization challenges. Despite raising $3.3 million in funding and achieving strong developer adoption with its open-source models, the startup struggled to convert fair pricing and open-source popularity into a sustainable, profitable business model as a standalone text-to-speech (TTS) company. Services went offline on December 11, 2023, followed by a formal public announcement in early January 2024.
