Argo AI
Pay Tribute
Biography
Argo AI was a self-driving vehicle technology startup founded by ex-Google and Uber engineers, backed by roughly $3.6 billion in combined investment from Ford and Volkswagen to build Level 4 autonomous driving systems for robotaxis.
Cause of Death
Ford and Volkswagen — Argo's only major backers, having invested over $2.6 billion combined — concluded that profitable, fully autonomous robotaxis were much further away than the 2021 commercial launch they had originally targeted. Argo was unable to attract new outside investors. Ford took a $2.7 billion non-cash impairment on its stake and redirected capital toward in-house driver-assist (ADAS) technology instead of full autonomy; VW shifted its self-driving work to its own Cariad unit. Argo shut down on October 26, 2022, with some staff absorbed into Ford and VW. (Sources: TechCrunch, Reuters, Ars Technica, AP News.)
