Babylon Health was a UK telehealth company offering an AI-powered symptom-checker chatbot alongside video consultations, once marketed as a 'doctor in your pocket' and championed by UK health officials.
Cause of Death
Babylon went public via SPAC in October 2021 at a $4.2 billion valuation, but its shares fell roughly 99% within 18 months as the company burned through hundreds of millions of dollars without turning a profit. It lost major NHS contracts in the UK, a US expansion struggled, and a take-private deal with MindMaze collapsed in mid-2023. On August 9, 2023 two Babylon US subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to liquidate; the UK business was put into administration weeks later and its assets sold to eMed Healthcare UK for a fraction of the company's peak value.
