Biography
A non-partisan, non-profit AI-powered media verification tool designed to detect deepfakes, manipulated images, videos, and synthetic audio clips across social media to combat election disinformation.
Cause of Death
TrueMedia.org was originally conceived as a targeted 2024 project to assist journalists, fact-checkers, and the general public during election cycles worldwide. Founder Dr. Oren Etzioni stated that the high financial cost of maintaining the online detection service played a significant role in shutting it down. Converting to a for-profit entity or raising additional venture funding conflicted with the nonprofit's core charter. Additionally, the anticipated overwhelming 'tsunami of disinformation' during the 2024 elections did not materialize at the expected scale. Consequently, the group decided to shut down the live online service after January 13, 2025, and release its technology as open-source software.
