Biography
Ghost Autonomy (formerly Ghost Locomotion) built autonomous-driving software for automaker partners, and had recently joined the OpenAI Startup Fund to explore using large language models for self-driving perception.
Cause of Death
Ghost had raised nearly $220 million and, in November 2023, received a $5 million investment from the OpenAI Startup Fund along with Azure compute access, betting that multimodal LLMs could help self-driving systems reason about rare 'long tail' scenarios. Five months later, on April 3, 2024, the company shut down entirely, laying off about 100 staff. CEO John Hayes said the years of R&D still required to bring a product to market 'could not be financed' given the difficult venture funding climate for autonomy startups.
