Olive AI
Pay Tribute
Biography
Olive AI was a healthcare automation startup that sold AI-powered 'digital employees' meant to automate hospital administrative work such as insurance eligibility checks, prior authorization and claims processing.
Cause of Death
Olive raised over $900 million and reached a $4 billion valuation in July 2021 after a $400 million round, serving 900+ hospitals at its peak. CEO Sean Lane later admitted the company's 'fast-paced growth and lack of focus' had strained its product and engineering resources. Olive laid off 450 employees in July 2022 and another 215 in February 2023 as digital-health funding dried up. On October 31, 2023, Olive sold its clearinghouse and patient-access units to Waystar and its prior-authorization unit to Humata Health, and wound down the rest of the company — a business that raised nearly $1 billion sold for parts.
