Biography
Luminar Technologies was a prominent developer and manufacturer of automotive LiDAR (light detection and ranging) hardware and perception software designed to power advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles for major automakers including Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Polestar.
Cause of Death
Luminar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy following severe cash depletion, extensive layoffs, executive instability, and the termination/dispute of a critical contract with its key customer, Volvo. Under court-supervised Chapter 11 proceedings, Luminar ceased normal operations and liquidated its assets, selling its photonics subsidiary to Quantum Computing Inc. and its core LiDAR business to MicroVision under a plan of liquidation.
